Jerry Rice Moves to Denver
Warning: Football Talk
Jerry Rice, that long-time 49er WR, quite possibly the best wide receiver the NFL has ever seen, goes to Mike Shanahan's Denver Broncos.
He began his practice scrimmage with the team on 1 June, donning a new number (19) and not the good old no. 80 that has seen him in countless trips to the Super Bowl. Currently, Rod Smith, an 11-year Bronco veteran wears that number.
I think it is nice for Rice, considering his stature in NFL history, to let WR Rod Smith wear the number. After all, Rod earned that number 80 for Denver.
Personally, I would rather have seen Rice retire with the number 80, period. It's like seeing Dan Marino wearing a number 30 or John Elway a 70.
I wonder why Mike Shanahan got him on the team? I don't think he can beef up the offensive line much, taking into account his performance last season with the Seahawks. I do think filling in the shows of Shannon Sharpe and Ed McCaffrey (both retired) are a daunting task for Rod Smith but what can Jerry Rice do?
But as I said, maybe a miracle will happen this year :)
