ANIMA CHRISTI

When I was in Cebu doing technical training for a client, I attended Mass at the Sacred Heart Parish in D. Jakosalem. One of the hymns sung during the Communion Rites was ANIMA CHRISTI (Latin for "SOUL OF CHRIST").

I remembered this because in 6 days shall be be the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. And ANIMA CHRISTI was the favorite prayer of St. Ignatius. He so loved this prayer that he put it in the beginning of his famous "Spiritual Exercises" leading people to believe that he wrote it.

The text goes like this (Latin in blue, English in red):

Anima Christi, sanctifica me. Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Corpus Christi, salva me. Body of Christ, save me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passio Christi, conforta me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O bone Iesu, exaudi me. O good Jesus, hear me.
Intra tua vulnera absconde me. Within Thy wounds, hide me.
Ne permittas me separari a te. Separated from Thee let me never be.
Ab hoste maligno defende me. From the malignant enemy, defend me.
In hora mortis meae voca me. At the hour of death, call me.
Et iube me venire ad te, To come to Thee, bid me,
Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te That I may praise Thee in the company
in saecula saeculorum. Amen. Of Thy Saints, for all eternity. Amen.
